It’s easy to see why so many people are drawn to residential and commercial window tinting. It yields dramatic dividends in terms of privacy and energy savings. That said, it won’t last forever. With proper cleaning and maintenance (which is, coincidentally, minimal), you can expect window film to last upwards of ten years. But how do you know your film is nearing the end of its lifetime? That’s what we’re here to address today. If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to look into window film replacement.
Fading and Discoloration
One of the telltale signs that solar window films require replacement is fading. Over time, they may lose some of their UV blocking properties. In the case of decorative window film, this could take the form of your custom designs displaying some noticeable discoloration.
Generally speaking, higher quality window film will hold up under intense sunlight for longer. But nothing is completely immune from the impact of light damage.
The amount of scratches visible on your window film is less a function of time and more of what your vehicle has been through. You might find yourself tolerant of insignificant scratches. After all, these are mostly aesthetic. But major cuts can seriously inhibit the lifespan of your window film. In this scenario, it’s best just to get it replaced, and be more careful moving forward.
If your newly installed window films display bubbling, this is almost certainly the result of either faulty installation, or you not having allowed it proper time to cure. Still, even with adequate installation and curing time, bubbles tend to form under the film as the material deteriorates with time.
Like with discoloration, you can slow down this process by investing in higher quality window film. Cheap window film can begin to bubble as early as sixth months after installation. In the end, you aren’t even saving money by opting for these ‘cheaper’ options.
Peeling around the edges of your window film is one of the most obvious signs that it requires replacement. Over time, the adhesives that keep the film in contact with the glass will begin to break down. In the middle of the film, this takes the form of bubbling. But on the edges and corners, it will peel.
