How Affordable Is Residential Window Tinting?

Tinting windows is a good investment in the comfort and safety of your home. Installing window tinting film on your windows has many benefits, including saving you money on your utilities and providing you with security for your home. To know if the investment is the right choice for you, however, you have to know what the cost of window tinting truly is.  If you want an exact price, you’ll need to get a quote for your home, but the average cost is usually between $5-$8/square foot. The following details can often influence the final cost of affordable window tinting.

How Affordable Is Residential Window Tinting?

Residential window tinting is more affordable than you’d expect.

Type of Film

The biggest influence on the cost of window film installation is going to be the type of film. Ceramic film is the “top of the line” and most expensive type of window film. You get a lot for the money, however. Ceramic film is an infrared film, which blocks at least 65% of heat, even when it is clear, and usually has a 10 year or longer warranty. Ceramic film is only appropriate for single pane windows, however, since it absorbs enough heat that it could potentially crack double panes. At the other end, non-reflective film is often the most affordable window tinting film. It blocks UV light and protects furniture. If you choose a dark shade, this film will also create privacy.

The remaining three types of film are usually in the middle ground for pricing. Frost or decorative films offer privacy day and night. Security window film increases the strength of your windows in the event that they’re struck with something. Finally, silver reflective window film has a mirror tint for complete privacy during the day and reflects up to 75% of heat (since it reflects the heat, it is safe for double pane windows).

Area of Windows

If the windows in your home are oversized, you will likely find that there is an extra charge for applying film to them. This is often in the neighborhood of an extra $1 per square foot.

Other Factors

The final factors you need to consider are those that increase the cost of labor. If you have unusually shaped windows, like half-moons, they will not be able to be pre-cut. If your windows are taller than the average window, there may be a cost for renting specialty equipment as well.
