Investing in safety glass for your home or business is a great decision. It helps to maintain privacy within your building and also makes the windows safer if someone should ever try to break in. Once you’ve decided on safety glass, you must choose which type you want. The two common types of safety glass are laminated and tempered.
Tempered safety glass is created by heating and cooling a standard piece of glass, a process known as quenching. Professionals take the glass and heat it to a very high temperature and then cool it rapidly. This process hardens the glass, making it four to five times stronger than regular glass. This makes it a lot more resistant to breaking. However, if it does break, the safety glass shatters into very small pieces which make injuries less likely to occur. This makes it a great option if you are just looking for strength and durability. However, it doesn’t offer protection from the harsh rays of the sun or block out any sound. Tempered glass tends to run cheaper than laminated glass.
Laminated safety glass is made from two or more pieces of glass with a vinyl later in between. Combining pieces of glass together makes it a lot more thick so that it is resistant to breaking. Laminated safety glass also provides protection from UV rays and has sound reduction qualities to keep the outside noise from coming in. This type of glass normally takes less time than tempered glass to be made because a lot of shops keep laminated glass stocked. Thicker forms of laminated glass are said to be burglar and bullet resistant. Because it holds up so well, it is commonly used for car windshields.
