How to Maintain Your Residential Window Film

There are several things that make residential window film a great investment, from it’s energy-efficiency to the protection from the sun’s UV rays. And you want to be able to enjoy the benefits of your window film for as long as you can. With the right care, you can keep your window film in great condition. Here are some useful tips for window film maintenance.

Proper Cleaning

Regular cleaning helps maintain the quality of your window film, but be aware that you can have too much of a good thing. The rule of thumb is to wait for at least one week after your window film is installed before you try to clean it. Then to clean all you have to do is use any window cleaner that is ammonia free and a soft cloth or squeegee. It’s recommended to use a microfiber cloth and foam cleaners to prevent streaking. Just make sure not to scrape or scrub because that could damage the film.

Allow Curing Time

The reason why you shouldn’t clean or even touch your window film for the first week after it is installed is that it has to undergo a curing process. Curing is the natural process of the window film completely adhering to the window. At first, there will be some moisture buildup that might make your window look streaky or hazy, but left on its own the moisture will evaporate, and the window will clear up. It’s important to leave your window film alone during this time because any tampering with it might ruin its bond to the window. Keep in mind that you can always double check that everything’s alright by calling a professional if you still have concerns.

There are No Repairs

Unfortunately, if your window film is chipped or scratched, then there is no way to patch it or fill in the cracks. Since window film can’t be repaired, then replacing it would be your only choice. This is why the best care for your window film is prevention. By being mindful of what you place near your windows, such as the types of blinds, and making sure you are cleaning properly, you shouldn’t have problems. But if your window film does need replacing, you should have a warranty that covers the cost.
